Pianist, composer, and Fulbright Scholar ARMEN DONELIAN has performed and taught in 25 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle and Far East. He has appeared since 1975 as a featured solo pianist, leader of his own quintet and trio, and as a sideman with jazz legends including Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker, Paquito D’Rivera, Mongo Santamaria, and Billy Harper. His recordings and performances as leader have featured Eddie Gomez, Billy Hart, Paul Motian, Dave Liebman, Ratzo Harris, Harvie S, Ed Schuller, George Schuller, Keith Copeland, Bob Moses, Marc Johnson, Ben Riley, Thomas Chapin, Anthony Cox, Bill Stewart, Paquito D’Rivera, Alex Foster, Steve Berrios, Tyshawn Sorey, Marc Mommaas, Dean Johnson, Calvin Hill, and Jeff Williams. He has taught at the New School, William Paterson University, the Manhattan School of Music, Yerevan State Conservatory (Armenia), and the Israel Conservatory.
IRA COLEMAN was born in Stockholm, Sweden, raised in Southern France, lived in Germany for 14 years, and is fluent in all 3 languages. He studied double bass at the Cologne Hochschule für Musik and before moving to the US to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston where he graduated in 1985. Ira was inspired at an early age, though he didn’t actually pick up a bass until he was 19 years old. “My parents met many expatriate artists, writers and musicians,” he says. Among visitors to his childhood home were Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Charlies Mingus and Chester Himes. Over the years, Ira has worked with Cab Calloway, Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, Branford Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jessye Norman, Plácido Domingo and Sting. He was musical director for vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and toured with her internationally from 2002 until 2009, and has built an international reputation for versatility.
